I have a dell b130 inspiron notebook with a 40 gb hard drive, 512 mb of ram, a 1.60 GHz processor and windows xp home edition. i keed running into the problem with randomly losing hard drive space. I have about 33 gb usable on the hard drive and only enough stuff on it to use up about 13 gb, so i should have about 20 gb free. the thing is, i dont. I had this problem about 2 weeks ago, so i backed up all my important files, and did a full system restore to put it back to factory settings. everything was fine until today when i looked at it, it says that i have only about 6 gb free when like i said earlier, i should have about 20 free. does anyone know what might be causing this?

Have you cleaned up your hard drive by deleting old files and cookies? Then do a defrag. That helps me.

Have you been cleaning out your cache?

From Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options:
delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
(You can also set days to store history to 0.)

----- These actions will clear your computer’s cache. (For a description of cache, go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/ph/yahoo/mail/access/access-27210.html )
Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).

Do you automatically make backups of files? Example: I have Word and Excel set to automatically create a backup file as I go along. These come in handy when you mess up, however, you have to go back and manually delete them.

Other than that, I would go into Safe Mode and run any anti-spy or antivirus program you have. You stand a better chance of catching any self-executing viruses if you look for them in safe mode. When you restart, you may find your icons out of order. No biggee. Just drag them back.
