w is right about using the pre-emergent crabgrass killer that usually come with fertilizer (but can be bought by itself for people who want to prevent crabgrass but not fertilize the lawn for some reason). But to answer your question there are post-emergent crabgrass killers that will kill crabgrass and other weedy annual grasses and not harm the turf grasses. It works best when the crabgrass is growing so if you are in the middle of a drought and the crabgrass isn't growing wait till you get a few rainfalls to get it active and then spray. You L&G Center should have it (a very good one is MSMA Crabgrass Killer by Bonide) and several manufacturers make it. If you don't see it ask the garden tech for help.

Once Crabgrass has come out of dormancy there is little that can be done. What you need to do to control it is apply a pre emergent. The following are generally useful : pendimethalin, bensulide, benefin, and trifluralin. (Professional pesticide applicators may also use dithiopyr, oxadiazon, and prodiamine.) Oryzalin is also available to the home gardener, but it is for use in warm-season turf only. Preemergent herbicides must be applied before the crabgrass germinates (usually from mid-January in southern areas of the state to early March in cooler areas).

They make weed and feeds specifically for weeds such as crab grass. Use one now and then in 2 months. Mow first and water after. Make sure that you use a product that is for your type of grass or it will kill your lawn.

Fertilization only make crabgrass grow better. Too late.
