In baseball, if you go at least 6 innings and give up 3 runs or less, that is a "quality start". But what if you go past the 6th inning, give up no runs and then give up 4 or more runs in the 7th, 8th, or 9th innings. Does this still give you a quality start even though your linescore indicates you gave up 4 or more runs?

6 IP, 3 ER = Quality Start

8 IP, 4 ER = All 4 runs were given up in 8th inning. < == Quality Start? Yes / No ??

No, it's not a quality start. No matter how many innings a pitcher pitches, if he gives up 4+ runs it's not a quality start.
Obviously it doesn't make a ton of sense, but that's just how it is.

A QS is "six or more innings" AND "three or fewer earned runs". So, no, that's not a QS.

The minimum QS yields an ERA of 4.50, which even in these inflationary times doesn't really impress me. The 8 IP, 4 ER gives the same 4.50 ERA, so I suppose if you MUST have a performance validated by calling it a "quality start", go right ahead. The QS definition isn't very useful anyway. James game scores are both more insightful and a lot more fun.

the are both quality starts because they didnt over do it and give up a lot of runs
it would be considered more of a quality start if the pitcher got the win
but the 8 IP, 4 ER then the coach should have pulled him out earlier in the game
not many pitchers should go past the 7th inning
because the get tired more

no its not because you have to go at least 6 innings, which he did, but he has to give up less than 3 runs, which he clearly did not.
