well they have an excellent sense of smell, and they can follow the scent of their home in order to get back there.

Cats and dogs (other pets too) have a good memory and good sense of smell. I can be miles from home and my dog knows where we are going just by where we turn. If I get to an intersection and go left he knows it my moms house, and gets excited. If i turn Right he knows its the vet and puts his tail between his legs, and we dont go to either location more than once a month, and the vet is usually only once a year. I figure if they can know this from a car going 50mph than on foot should be no problem.

There's been a lot of studies on this one. . .

Ants and other insects usually rely on the sun. Dogs often follow the scent. I figure some of them have divine guidence.

I had an Akita that had been dumped in the woods by his owner.
He would always hold his head in the air sniffing the wind. I figured he was trying to locate the way home.

Animals have very good smelling senses. They know where home is. You could say its almost like we have a sense of direction.

What they have is a wonderful sensing system ... and a wonderful Mommy, too!
You must be really, really, good to them for them to want to find there way home.
