USB stands for Ultra Serial Bus
Its capable of hooking a computer up to all kinds of stuff, including printers, scanners, mice, keyboards, webcams, mobile phones, etc. etc. etc. using a standard plug and method of interface.

USBs are great. (Universal Serial Bus)
Instead of connecting a device via the old serial or parallel method, many items today come plug-'n-play. The newer versions of Windows have drivers for them already installed. When you plug one in (like a printer or a flashdrive), you are told that "new hardware has been found" and if the driver is on your HD, it will install. If not, many items come with a CD for the driver or you can go to the website and download it.

A word of caution:
If you unplug a device without "safely removing" through the icon on the system try, a different device will not run. No problem. Just reinsert the first device, "safely remove," then insert the new one.

Another caution -- On occasion, you may run into this:
Problem With USB Port – Can’t Reinstall USB Device – Plug & Play Problem
- With Windows Plug & Play feature, Windows is supposed to recognize any device plugged into a USB port -- the problem is after it recognizes something once, Plug & Play will never again try to install that device. You need to erase all memory of the device (printer etc) from the computer.
- Right-click on My Computer, cl Properties, click Hardware, click Device Manager.
- Click on the plus sign next to “Universal Serial Bus.” Look for the problem device’s name and right-click. Now Remove. Restart and reinstall.

USB ports provide an interface and power-source for peripheral devices.
I've used the USB port on my computers for connecting printers, scanners, game-controllers, external hard drives, memory cards, digital cameras, mice, keyboards, cellphones, portable music players, and exhaust fans to the computer.
The USB port on my Win2k work computer won't allow for a data-exchange with my portable player, but it recharges the battery just fine.
