It's not a liberalism versus conservatism issue, for starters. Not everything is, and it's good to bear that in mind. As for the good treatment and the beyond-question guilt of its population, why the lack of transparency then? Why the secret trials?

Many are under age. They are not well treated. The US is currently using torture which I find to be appalling: waterboarding and stress positions are but one example.
To me it is a disgrace that the US which stands for freedom and liberty and has such a well developed law system is resorting to such barbarous behavior. I also don't like the prisoners are essentially in legal limbo. The only reason they are held as "detainees" and not pows or something along those lines is to avoid the standards of treatment that come with those legal definitions.
Also the US doesn't have a very good case against many of the prisoners there. Many are young and were picked up because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time - not because they have actually committed a crime.
But the main reason I oppose Gitmo is that prison is a radicalizing social experience, it's going to make them worse not better. We need to find a better solution to deal with them. We need to go through in a realistic way figure out which ones are a threat, and have committed crimes. Rehab the rest (some as young as 14) and release certain ones. The ones who are a real threat we need to bring to the US and prosecute. Simple as that.
I don't like the idea that we are sacrificing our ideals here, I find that hypocritical and that it weakens the institutions we are trying to protect.

You are told those things
But a word of caution -
The Germans were told that the jews got 3 meals a day music lessons and were taught a progessive trade so they would not be a burden on society anymore -
There were films of this With happy prisoners clean and well cared for playing an insrument
-------------------------------------------------
This was propaganda
---------------------------------
Why must the US government hide these people off shore Why has the law changed to protect CIA agents from criminal prosecution in cases of torture - Why the redefining of torture to come more into line with Russia's durring the hieght of the cold war
------------------------
Germans are not and were not stupid people -
They had no idea of what was going on in those camps they believed that there were flute harmonies schooling and progressive trades being taught -
When the Canadian and British army got there - They rounded up the German public and forced them to tour these camps to see it for themselves - Most vomited some passed out - Still to this day some Germans will not believe what happened and prefer to believe flute harmonies and progressive trades
-----------------
So tell me why must the US hide these people from the rule of law with no charges and why should I believe the story of the government that they get 3 meals a day and a prayer mat -
Put in out in the open if you have nothing to hide -
The government wants belief than show transparency or close it

Liberals? Hardly. It seems that only the neocons (read: "Liberals with guns") want to keep Gitmo. Colin Powell, John McCain, and many other Republicans see Gitmo as a travesty.
"Most of these guys..." - Is that what our system is based on? The cheerleaders for keeping Gitmo are mostly motivated by anger, fear, ignorance and a need for simplicity. Wake up - the world is not black and white, no matter how much the neocons and Christian fundamentalists wish it were.
If only the liberals want to close Gitmo, then 73% of the country is liberal...

Too right! The wire fence around Guantanamo bay is just there to keep the Mexicans out. I`m thinking about booking a couple of weeks myself. Hanging upside down by your toes with a Vodka colonic is just sooooooooo relaxing.

why do you hate America and its system of justice? Why do you think others should not have the right to defend themselves against charges they are told about? Why do you think America should allow gulags similar to Hitler and Stalin? Why wouldn't you want to show the world concrete guilt of their horrible atrocities instead of giving them the moral high ground of being martyrs? Why is it that 90% of the people detained in this situation have been released throughout Iraq and afghanastan without any charges? Why are you people afraid of courts and American Law, do you have a problem with truth?

Liberals like Colin Powell, Condy Rice, John McCain... oh, and George W. Bush, who two years ago declared he wanted to close Gitmo?
You neocons are so obsessed with trying to prove that Liberals are the death of America that you apparently choose to forget the facts.
Serve your country. I did. Get injured in the field of battle. I did. Understand that this administration isn't doing what's best for America. I did.

I see Ken has them all convicted as "terrorists."
If they weren't terrorists they wouldn't have been arrested, right?
So if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and you were picked up in a police sweep, or mistakenly identified by a witness, or were the victim of overzealous prosecutor (Duke Lacrosse)
Your position would be that you are getting what you deserve, right, Kenny boy?

because it's unconstitutional--
keeping them at guantanamo bay indefinitely means that they will be denied habeas corpus. they're guaranteed that right under the constitution since they're being tried by the US government.
we wouldn't send them back to saudi arabia, we'd move them to a different holding place.
