You CAN hook up any way you choose.
If the battery voltage matches the lamps rated voltage,
the correct hookup is C+ to A+ & B+, and C- to A- and B-.
This would be called a "parallel connection".
If you wire in a chain, (called a "series connection"),
you would need a battery of 2X the lamps rated voltage
to get the light they were designed to produce.
