Absolutely you should highly consider a technique. At your age, it is very difficult to catch up taking a single class of jazz. If you are thinking about competiting, most dance studios require technique for at least two hours.

No, you don't have to take ballet to succeed in jazz dancing.
However, it's a great idea if you can do just that. Ballet technique will keep you grounded and your body settled so when you start whipping about in jazz you are less likely to get injured and more likely to improve quicker.
Remember, let your energy extend through the combination; don't settle for just doing the steps.

Jazz and ballet are wayyyyy different I am 13 and I am on the competition team. In Jazz we don't use any ballet terms. You do not have to take ballet to do Jazz. You will do good either way. Trust me. The only terms you probally should know for Jazz is...
Perriwette
Posse
and maybe a few more but you should be good.
Jazz is awesome!!!!!
Take it the rest of your life!

Ballet would definately help you in jazz as ballet is the foundation for all types of dance. If you are looking at doing theatre having taken ballet would benefit you. Sometimes ballet can be boring but at many competitions the judges "favorite" comment is "stay in those ballet classes". Good luck to you!

hey, im 13. I started taking jazz, after having taken ballet, and I found that there were about a zillion reasons to be thankful for that. There are muscles that you use in ballet that you use in nothing else, and simply by learning the basics, you gain a core strength, something to base, pretty much all other kinds of dance off of. I would definetly reccomend taking ballet. Good luck!

Ballet is the basis of all dance. Since you have done hip hop and dance team you should be pretty good at jazz teqnique and be able to do fine in jazz class but i would always recomend to take ballet b/c it helps you learn poise and strength in ur ankles good luck

I'd suggest giving ballet a shot.
It's the "foundation" of all types of dance, and just trying it out for a year can't hurt at all. Talk to your jazz and your possible ballet teacher and see what they think, but it might help you even more to expand your dance abilities.

For jazz I don't think you have to learn ballet. But, it could give you an extra kick in jazz.

you don't need any specific training to take jazz because you would be training in that genre. every dance is different in a way. so don't worry about it. you don't need to take any other dance to be able to succeed. plus you have dance experience so you probably know a few things here and there. i hope you have a great time and all the fun you could. don't get discouraged and keep your head held high. happy dancing!
