On an application form, it asks whether you are disabled. My asthma is mild, however in hot indoor conditions I do need take my inhaler. I dont consider it a disablility and Im far from needing to be registered as disabled, but should I put it on the application form so that they know? Wouldnt it just scare an employer off, or should I tell them after I have been offerred the job??

I can't believe they are asking you medical questions! That's illegal in the U.S. under the HIIPA laws. However, on your specific questions, severe asthma can be a disability. The only reason I know that is because I know 2 individuals on SSI (disability) for asthma. If it's not a disability to you, just write "no." What they are allowed to ask under the ADA is whether you require any special accomodations for employment. They have no right to ask any medical information of you before or after you are hired.

You can only claim a "disability" status if a liscensed physician has deemed you do actually be "disabled". In order to get this status, you must meet your states requirements & criteria that would enable you to qualify for disability status. Disabled workers require special equipment & SOME employers want to know your status in order to accomodate the needs of a disabled worker. If you claim to be disabled when you are not, then all you are doing is putting yourself out of the running for the job that you have applied for. Asthma is a medical condition that can be controlled & regulated with medications & treatment. Ask your Doctor about it on your next visit. I would not mention it to a potential employer unless it was asked on the form or in the interview. Even then, I do believe that it is a violation of the federal guidelines to ask a person about their medical history BEFORE they have been hired. After hiring, it is essential to get this info for insurance & medical benefits.

Asthma is a medical condition, in which certain situations or work environments can trigger asthma off.

You can put medical condition and detail it - they cannot discriminate against you on the basis of medical condition. But you might want to check out what kind of work it is before hand and ensure that the employer is fully aware of your needs.

In your case, NO it is not a disability. However, it can indeed be a disability. You should NOT place that on an application. Inform them after you are hired.
