So, let me get this straight... You're sitting there knitting a sweater or whatever it is you do, and a spider crawls by. So you get the urge to swallow a bottle of pills.
Hmm...something doesn't quite add up.

There are two kinds of fears. Rational and irrational. You fear of spiders is an irrational fear. Many times it is due to not completely understanding spiders. Learn more about them. Go to the zoo or natural museum and spend some time watching some of the larger ones. Find a garden spider and watch it for a while. Get some books about them and read up on them. Get a local field guide. Learn about spiders living around you. When you find a spider go and look up what spider that is. Unless you are living in Australia, there are very few local spiders that are dangerous and those that are are dangerous only if you go and mess with them.

I don't exactly feel like killing myself, but if I see a big spider coming at me I'll find myself standing on top of some sort of furniture before I even know what happened.

Uh, no, not really.
I'm not a fan of spiders, but I'm not going to kill myself because I'm afraid of them.
And just so you feel better, on average, each person eats 8 spiders a year in their sleep. :)
