Find one of your favorite CDs on Amazon.com Then check out what other CDs people bought when they purchased your favorite CD. I have done that and have found so many great bands I would have never heard of.

Arch Enemy, Norther, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Iced Earth, Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, Dio, Ackercocke, Wintersun, Dark Tranquility, Iron Maiden.
I'd also suggest Dream Theater - Album; Images and Words and Tool - Album; Lateralus <3 (they're not heavy metal perse more like prog rock but they're excellent bands).
Check out them, I'll post more later.
