I know that Moldova is gripped with some "identity" problems. The native people are predominantly Romanian speaking. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, there was some talk of a reunion with Romania, but that is probably not feasable in the near future. There is still a large Russian population there, which is largely situated in the "Trans Dniester Republic". This enclave on the east bank of the Dniester has never been recognized by any nation save by Russia.

In my view, Moldova should rejoin Romania, and the land to the east of the Diester River should be given to Ukraine. Certain local laws can protect the Russian minority, but the TD Republic would be dissolved for good. That's my two cents. I'm sure it's a nice country, but I've never been there.

The Republic of Moldova (Republica Moldova) is a landlocked country in eastern Europe, located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south. Historically part of the Principality of Moldavia, it was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1812, and reunited with other Romanian lands in Romania in 1918. After changing hands during World War II and being annexed by the Soviet Union, it was known as the Moldavian SSR between 1945 and 1991, and finally declared its independence on 27 August 1991.

Moldova is a parliamentary democracy with a President as its head of state and a Prime Minister as its head of government. The country is a member state of the United Nations, WMO, UNICEF, GUAM, CIS, BSEC and other international organizations.
