the only good he done was for his local community. He kept the peace there and bought shelters for the not so well off.he gave alot of money to help people in his town who were not so rich.Yes he killed hundreds of innocent people. He was the biggest cocaine dealer ever so if you were a coke head you probably loved him too.In all he wastn't a nice man.One time he blew up a plane and killed everyone on it just to kill the one person he was after. He died a lonely man with not so many friends left.

Pablo Escobar grew up in some of the worst neighborhoods of Medellin during some very violent times. He started his criminal life as a petty thief and carjacker in the 1970's. This timing was important, becasue cocaine cultivation had started to develop in Colombia around this time, but it was very decentralized. It consisted primarily of foreigners buying product very cheaply and transporting it to the US and Europe. Escobar used his knowledge of Medellin and Colombian drug production to convince other street criminals to join him in consolidating the drug business.
The power and money he gained by controlling the drug empire allowed him to gain power in other areas of Colombian life. At the height of his power his wealth was estimated at about $3 billion and used a lot of this money to improve the poor neighborhoods that he grew up in. Most of these areas had no electricity, clean water, paved streets, etc. He paid for improvements that the government either couldn't afford or didn't want to pay for. Escobar didn't do it because he was a nice person, but because he wanted to ensure that all the poor people would support him. These peopel, along with corrupt politicians that he had bribe, ensured that the Colombian governemnt would not try to capture him.
This continued until his hunger for power grew out of control and he began openly assisinating politicians who disagreed with him, giving rewards to people that killed police, and tried to control all of the Colombain governemnt. This led the government, with US support, to begin attacking his organization and taking away his resources. Eventually they killed him, but the drug trade didn't end, jsut went to new groups.
The reason people idolize him is that most of these people are poor and have limited possibilities to improve their lives. They see in Escobar a way to gain money and power, that they otherwise would never have access to. Even though Escobar's end was bloody, for people looking to survive it seems worth the price.

The same reason people idolize 50cent, Snoopdogg, and other rap/rock stars.
The same reason the movie Scarface has made such a resurgence.
$=Power...or so people think.

Why do we hear about every minute of Paris Hilton's jail term?
Instead of puniching these people by truly casting them out, we put them at the center of our adoring media.
Sick culture altogether.
