Since men did not have back pockets how did they prove who they were. Also what did women use in the 19th century.

Because traveling was so limited, it wasn't a problem. Community members knew who you were. You were defined by your relatives and spouse. You were also defined by your occupation. For example, everyone knew the school teacher! If people didn't know you, they pretty much took you at face value. You were accepted at your word, but if you failed to live up to what you said, you were run off.

generally people did not travel very far before the advent of the automobile and were known from birth in their area.

People relied on others to vouch for their identity as well as being known to others they deal with.
