I am not from there, but that is a great question. Altho I am a democrat, I too have to ask that question and I can only come up with one answer... money!

Let's see if I can explain. Massachusetts is a far-left state. I can remember chanting Humphrey slogans on the schoolbus in elementary school there. (I didn't actually chant, but I was definitely the outlier). Forget about it. Mass is not going to come around. Work on the rest of the country.

Yeah, he's pretty good at getting federal money for state/local pork projects. One of the best, I hear.

Corruption. As long as he gives a piece to his voters back home, they'll keep sending him to rip the rest of us off.
