I'm interested in temporary HGV Driving work. I've gained my Cat C & C+E licences (equivilant to HGV 1) through the military but am not yet 21 years old. Does anyone know the likelihood of getting temporary work as it would appear most agencies are looking for 25+. Thanks

Explain on CV that you gained your C+E through the Military and that you are under 25 but have lots of driving experience. Some companies insurance policies accept this but I am afraid some don't. J

If you have left the military then your HGV licence is no longer valid - you will be able to reclaim it when you are 21.

The only other option you have is to get an employer to employ you under the young drivers scheme and that way you can have the C and CE between the age of 18 and 21.

Hello Matts,
Congratulations on achieving your HGV LICENCE, I am proud of you they don't hand these out like leaflets you know, you have to work and study for them.
I am a retired HGV Driver of 42 years in the saddle, and hand on my heart, never even a scratch on any truck I have driven, and I carry that record to me no claims bonus' for my car. My last HGV was a Scania Unit, with almost any trailer from 40 foot flat to 60 foot Goose-neck, wonderful life and I dread to think of the miles I have covered. Now what can I do for you well here we go Son.
What it will all come down to for you is to understand that the insurance companies love young HGV Drivers, but not a lot, as you are a greater risk to them than an old b**ger like myself, Right so try this for a start, go and find your local parcel delivery company, who probably runs 7.5 tonners like DHL or parcel-line or even the Post Office, there is a good start there for any man that already has his licence got, and you will be up to 17 tonners before you know it, just don't hit anything with their little motors, prove you can do the job safely, and they will act on your performances. I know multi-drop is an awful grind but you are gaining experience every moment you are outside the companies gates. and this is the perfect way to get at least some experience, for your Haulage career to commence....
You don't say where you are living, and I wish you did, I would love to help you further in your quest to take my place on Britains roads. You can contact me via Yahoo.
answers E,mails amd I will promise to search further into this for you, tell me do you have Roping and Sheeting experience and I will teach you this too, as well as strapping and chains, wedges,etc.etc. Tony M

You won't be able to drive an H.G.V. on public roads until you are 21. An exception is made for the military, but a soon as you return to civvy street, standard U.K. driving laws will apply.

Once you are 21, get on the phone, send e-mails and pay visits on spec to agencies and haulage companies. You may have to start on something smaller than a 44-tonne artic to gain the experience, but as you gain that experience, jobs will be easier to find.

The 25+ age limit is down to insurance restrictions, but there are always companies who will give younger drivers a chance. Your military background will help you, too.

Good luck!!

Most HGV insurances stipulate an age of 25yrs or over.
But some companies, which are hard to find, accept 21yrs and over and have special exeptions on there insurance for people with good HGV experience.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.
