I have heard this too and yes it does work. My Gran used to do it. She also used to sharpen her vegetable knife on the front doorstep. Hence, I have a wickedly sharp knife for peeling the spuds. lol.

Sharpening is a two step process. First is grinding, this requires some sort for hard abrasive usually a natural stone, diamond stone, grinding wheel or emery cloth mounted to a flat surface. This will profile the edge removing nicks and scratches and leaving an edge that may have a burr on it. Honing removes the burr, this can be done with on step, with aluminum foil, a knife steel, leather strop, and other items. Honing does not really sharpen a dull knife though.

Cutting foil takes off some of the small burrs. If you really want to sharpen them, go to Walmart and buy a scissors sharpener. I paid $8 for the large one.

You cut the aluminium foil over and over again and it sharpens it.

I've tried it but the scissors don't stay sharp for long. I think an oilstone is better. I'd rather buy new scissors cos they are quite cheap.
