With a more than a smattering of Pink Floyd fan opinions popping up in response to this question, I'm surprised to see not a vote for the soundtrack to the 1972 French film, La Vallee. Released as 'Obscured by Clouds', the film's musical score more than stands alone, not only as a great soundtrack, but as a viable choice for the best Floyd album you've never heard of. From trippy instrumentals like the opening title track, to the funky/psychedelic songs 'Childhood's End' and 'Burning Bridges', this album has it all. While it's not going to replace 'Dark Side' as a fan favorite anytime soon, 'Obscured by Clouds' certainly deserves more recognition than being a relatively unknown predecessor to the aforementioned.

Floyd's Piper and Meddle are pretty cool

I'm going to have to go with Iron Butterfly's first one

and even the Doors' bluesy stuff like Morrison Hotel and LA Woman is more psychedelic than anything else that close to the turn of the decade

Sure 'Piper At The Gates of Dawn' is ONE of my favourite psychedelic albums (CD now), but I suggest you give The Pretty Things 'S.F. Sorrow' CD a listen. It was recorded around the same time as 'Piper' and 'Sgt. Pepper', is not as well-known, yet is truly psychedelic.

That's a great album. I have to stick with Dark Side of the Moon, though - if that still qualifies as psychedelic.

"Children of the Future" (1967) by the Steve Miller Band on Capital Records.."Sailor" followed in 1968...Stevie was a bluesman from Texas, but got his head turned around...one of the great San Francisco records ever..next stop London where Paul McCartney played drums on "My Dark Hour",the 3rd album as Paul Ramone...his early stuff IS the cat's pyjamas till the 70s and "The Joker" stepped in..Great singer and a GREAT guitarist..best backing musicians..Lonnie Turner on Bass...What happened??

Geez, can we really pick, I love Piper, but I gotta go with Ummagumma. I was in love after I heard Carfeul With That Axe Eugene.
