We had this door at the time when we moved. It's about 7 years now and on ocassions, when we press the remote (which is used to open and close the garage door), the door would start to close but once it reaches not even 1/4 of the way down, it would automatically go back up. I'm not sure if age is a possibility but I reckon it could be something to do with the chains. Can someone have a theory on why this is doing that? Because i'm sick of opening and closing it by hand.

Several things to check. Does the light on the motor head flash several times after it goes back up? If so the sensors at hte bottom of the door may be out of adjustment or dirty or the wires to them might be broken. If the light is not blinking, then it is most likely the torque adjustment. This is found at different places on the head of the opener depending which model and make you have. If chamberlain product, single light, it's the blue screws on the back of the unit. Other types may be on the side under the the light covers. Be carefull not to give too much torque. You should be able to 'catch' the door by hand to make it reverse.

Disconnect the garage door opener from the door. This is usually just a matter of removing a pin. Operate the door manually to make sure it works smoothly through the whole range of opening and closing. The door should balance at almost any position, partially opened or closed. If it does not the door needs adjusting. If it work smoothly with little effort the opeining and/or closing pressure switches need adjusting.

It has a sensor near the floor that will reverse the door if something blocks the light emited between the two sensors. Probably need to align them.

Go to a home center and buy a garage door lubricating kit and use it per the instructions on the package.

Have you verified that the safety sensors are aimed correctly, the connections are still good, and are functioning properly?
