"I got a new laptop that said it had 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Does that mean it is 2GHz each core or 1GHz each core"

no of course...each core has 1ghz meaning its like two processors running at the same time

it depends on the Exact type of processor you have; goto Intels' website, and look, I have linked one of thier more clear descriptions for you, that lists the CPU you seem to be describing.
