Astoria is the place for you. Beautiful little beach city, close enough Portland to you can travel easily and have it's advantages when you want. Yet far enough that you don't have to deal with any of their problems either. The city is small enough to feel friendly and large enough to generate plenty of work. Plenty of hills for hiking, great beaches and countryside. Check it out.

I think Salem, Oregon, would be a place for you. It has the advantage that it is a city and it is close to mountains, rivers,etc. Housing is also very reasonable.
