From your less than complete description I will assume the following:
1. You have broadband from some source, either CATV or DSL and it is terminated by a modem provided by the carrier.
2. You either have an integrated modem-router w. both wired and wireless functionality from the carrier OR you plug a router with wired and wireless capability into the modem from the router WAN port.
3. Your ultimate ISP is AOL.
4. You configured your wireless to use WEP and you want to change to WPA.
5. You cannot connect a different pc to the router LAN via CAT5 cable.
6. Either your router has a few LAN ports or you have a network switch connected to the router LAN port and this is where you will connect wired devices to the LAN.
Having said that lets get started:
1. Never configure or alter configuration of a router using a pc that is connected to the router via Wireless link. Always use a wired connection. Reboot the modem and router and all downstream pcs. Leave each device off for at least 0.5 minutes and start w. the modem, wait 0.5 min then turn on router and network switch if you have one, then wait 0.5 min and turn on downstream pcs.
2. Make sure you have a good, straight configuration, CAT5 patch cable. Connect this to the pc and to a router LAN port or to the network switch (whichever you have). Check the configuration of your pc's lan connection (start - then right cllick my network places, then select properties. On the pop up, right click on your LAN connection and select properties. On the second pop up, in the center, highlight Network Connections (TCP/IP) and click on the properties button below this. On the pop up make sure it states "obtain ip address automatically" and "obtain DNS automatically", click apply and close out completely. Open command prompt (start, run -type in cmd and hit enter). At the prompt, type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes and with the space before /. You should see a LAN IP address for each LAN connector on the pc; the LAN IP is in the format 192.168.x.y where x = 0 or 1 usually and y is between 2 and 255 inclusively. If you do not see this there is a problem between the pc and the router. Either a bad NIC, bad cable, or a bad LAN port in the router or switch; fix this. If you have a LAN IP address, note the default gateway address (probably 192.168.x.1 where x = 0 or 1). Now in command prompt type in "ping 192.168.x.1" without the quotes - note that the numbers behind ping are the ip address of the default gateway so it should not have the letter x in the ip address. You should receive 4 positive ping responses. If so your pc - network wired port is working. If not, fix it. Now in command prompt type "ping 4.2.2.2" and hit enter; you should have 4 positive responses. If not, there is a wan config error in the router that needs to be addressed or the modem is faulty. Address this until ping 4.2.2.2 is successful. Now in command prompt type "ping yahoo.com" and you should have 4 successful responses. If not, the DNS is not properly set (probably in the modem). Address this. Once you have these ping responses successful you have proper wired connection to the router and internet.
2. Now for the wep vs wpa change - Using the wired connection to the router, log onto the router via Internet Explorer. You type in the IP address of the default gateway to do this. You need the user name and password to get in. (If you had to make changes in #1 above you already know how to get in). Go to the wireless configuration section of your router (each router has a different pathway for this, some have it in a security section, some in a wireless section, some in the LAN section). Make the change to wpa and follow all other related criteria. Save your settings and you have addressed this. You should also consider all other wireless security matters at this time as well. NOTE what you did so you can go back if needed. Make one change at a time.
3. Now that you have changed things, each wireless unit has to be reconfigured to work with the change. Keep the wired link running and fire up each wireless unit, one at a time and make the needed changes. You can test the connection validity using the command prompt "ping 192.168.x.1" where 19.2168.x.1 is the actual default gateway ip. If this is successful you should be OK but also do the ping 4.2.2.2 and ping yahoo.com tests to be sure. Do this on ALL units and you should be in business.
Be sure to write again if you have a problem. Explain in detail what you did when the problem arose and we can help further.

in case you're touching on a 2WIRE modem/router. you will get entry to your modem interface with the aid of 192.168.a million.254/mdc and 172.sixteen.0.a million/administration for the previous version of 2wire modem like 2wire 1000sw you would be seing your administration AND DIAGNOSTIC CONSOLE internet site. on the left area under a interior of reach community , look for a on the spot. it relatively is the internet site wherein you could replace your WEP to WPA . WEP is a 10 digit selection and WPA - PSK is 13 digit selection. you need to use default wep or customize your wep.
