Well firstly Africa is a contenent not a country, so its hard to answer or come up with a solution as their are so many countries in Africa. I personally am South African ( i am not there now though, and i have lived - not visited, LIVED - all over the world.) and have asked myself the same question about why (practically) all of the countries are struggeling with these two problems among many others and how we can solve these problems.

The sad thing is, that all countries have Corruption and Poverty (even USA), well at least to some degree.

I think that these countries need a renewed sence of nationalism, so that they feel inspired to come together and improve their personal standard of living and that of their neighbours. The people need to be inspired to achive wealth, and this inspiration ( for wealth ) and their renewed nationalism needs to come from an influential leader.

I stayed in Singapore for a few months and thought i should do some research on their economy and history... well i think that they have got it down right. When they gained their independence they were too (like the african countries) left with littel to build a nation out of, expeirienced wars and what not, but the gov't encouraged and invested heavily in schooling (in english). The government also began housing projects (as you know singapore is small and they dont really have enough land, so many people live in appartments) so that the people could afford to live in acceptable accomidation, the government also has retirment plans for the people. well the list goes on... but i think you get the just of it. the government needs to be dedicated to the people. In Japan their government also inspired the people to seek out their own personal wealth, this encourages competition, which is healthy ( when the citizens are all working to increase their personal wealth they help to build up the economy).

Another thing i have often thought is that in many countries in africa the people are divided, for example north and south somalia. so there are civil wars going on in these countries worsening the poverty, as buildings and roads are destroyed. My solution for this would be that the UN and the rest of the world accept and recognize the nationalistic groups who want to be a soverign state (independent).

I have also thought that the reson many of these people are living in poverty (especially in the northern african countries) is because many still live in tribes and villages and remain traditional, these people are not looking to go out and earn a living and live in a mansion and drive a benz, they are just happy to be with family and friends as this is apart of their culture. However the enviroment is changing (global warming) and the African Contenent is expeirincing major changes and extreamities in their weather (longer harsher draughts and floods) this is not good as these people depend on either farming, fishing or living the life of a nomad; with the harsh weather these sources of living are not adequet.

In south africa , sadly, i think that their is poverty due to poor government. there are many people who do not pay taxes, so there is no money for the government to improve the county, also they waste the money that they do have (I.E. they are changin the names of streets, cities, and even provinces -that costs money and it is a waste! there are kids who only eat one meal a day if they are lucky, and instead of feeding a few hungary kids the government would rather go and change street signs and maps!)

well i am sorry i did not really have an answer for your question... but here are some of my veiws.
i think i could have carried on and on if i did not have things to do. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Corruption is the obstacle to alleviating extreme poverty in Africa. That's no secret. "Curing" it would take a united effort on the part of not only G8 but China and India too, as well as Saudi, Brazil, other large economies.

Easier said than done. Or were you just being rhetorical?

To get rid of the corruption stop giving the politicians money. It never gets to who it goes for. Just in the hands of the wing nuts in charge. To get rid of the poverty teach them how to use their resources. Africa has lots of natural resources that could be used to better themselves. Also birth control maybe.

Nice one!!! Let's try not letting the rulers have Swiss bank accounts for a start, and query it when they pay themselves a couple of billion dollars a year? How would that do? Yasar Arrafat died with a personal fortune of $3 billion dollars, my, didn't his job pay well? Yet, the Palestinians still loved him!!! No wonder they say, 'Love is blind' eh?
