My laptop, which is about three years old, just shuts down by itself pretty much at random. It is very hard to do homework on it, so I end up saving my documents every two minutes. I recently had limewire on it, and I heard stories of that program corrupting and messing up people's computers. So I uninstalled it. But I still had the same problem. So then I performed a virus scan. When the computer did manage to let the scan finish, turns out that there weren't any viruses. I was wondering if anybody knows what is going on with my computer, and if there are any solutions. Thank you.

It's possible the laptop is getting too warm and shutd down to prevent complete failure. Blow a can of air into the vent holes of the laptop to rid of any dust. The better circulation you have, the better it will run.

It's also possible you've caught something not detected by your virus scanner. Make sure it has current virus definitions (so it knows the latest viruses available) and rescan it. Also, go to spybot.com, install, update the program, and scan for spyware on your computer.

If you're still having problems, it might be time to reload your computer. Backup everything to CD/DVDs, get your recovery disks out, and go through the motions. I hope it down to this, but it might be your best option.

Good luck!

Laptops use a ribbon connector for transferring power and data to the display screen.

Some have a bad installation which causes failure of the ribbon and the display to go dark. Verify that your computer is actually shutting down when your display disappears.

If the battery is failing to hold a charge, the computer will shut down when the charge reaches its operating threshold.

If you suspect the battery, try out a new battery to see if your random shutdowns stop.

Go check your settings on your power scheme. Sometimes when you let ad ware and spy ware infiltrate the system it will make these changes to your system without you knowing it. And stay away from Lime wire and other sources of that kind. You only open yourself up for destruction and not to mention that it is pirating unless you pay for it of course.

Check your power settings to make sure they are okay. Then get Spybot Search & Destroy (free download)
