go here and download it it will be the correct AVG.
once you download it you need to update it first thing.
also uninstall the old one first before downloading.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_Free_Edition
use the first listed florida mirror site as it is the fastest download.
let me know how it goes.

When you run updates (from AVG Control Panel) do you get an error? Does id connect and show updating? Even with a fresh installation this is necessary.

Do you have anyother anti virus product installed, if so get rid of one or the other. You do not want two ACTIVE anti virus products on the same machine at the same time they will conflict with each other.

You may need to redownload the copy you have if it will not update. You can also run the online cleaner from another site to check and be sure a virus isn't keeping it from installing correctly.

Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com for a decent online scan.

Open program and click update. The AVG will establish Internet connection. Your virus database and other stuff on AVG will be updated. Only then its icon will appear in colors.
