Also, could I use a satelite dish for a sort of directional antenna to boost the signal?

Mostly depends on the wireless card and the router as well as "Line of sight". Most will work to 300-500 feet.

There are cards with external antenna connections which allow connection to directional or high gain antennas. You can upgrade to one if needed.

Your sat dish WONT work...wrong frequency. You can modifiy them but the effort just isn't worth it. There are dishes and many other types of WiFi anntennas available
