who is fed up with the really really bad spelling mistakes on here. Ok, I admit I'm an old(ish) woman and not up on the slang terminology used by so many these days, but why, oh why, can't people be bothered to spell correctly? I realise and appreciate that when texting, you are limited to characters and sometimes it's necessary to omit some especially when the person you are texting understands what you mean, but on here it's not necessary, is it? I mean I've still got 522 characters left after all my moaning. Is it any wonder that we are becoming a nation of illiterate idiots?
I'm sorry all of you under the age of 100 who may be upset here but come on people this is the land of Shakespeare - sort it owt!!!

Hey Kiss, this is the first time I've asked this! If you see it regularly, then doesn't that tell you something?
Yes, the 'owt' was deliberate.

I'm a little bit compulsive about spelling, too. And I confess that when I see terrible spelling or grammar, my gut reaction is usually negative. But the sad (for some of us) truth is that language is not static. It is constantly changing and evolving. The point of language is to communicate meaning and I have to admit, as ugly as some of the questions look because of their spelling and grammar, it is rare that I don't understand them. So the words, even with the spelling mistakes and strange construction, serve their purpose. After all, hundreds of years ago, Chaucer wrote:
"Whan that Aprill with his shoures sote
The droghte of Marche hath perced to the rote,
And bathed euery veyne in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;"
which looks pretty strange to modern eyes. Like everything else, language constantly changes. We don't have to like it. But we're probably not going to stop it.

The english language is constantly evolving...and sadly, in recent years it has been evolving for the worst.
Proper english is no longer used, and good literature is no longer appreciated.
However people that do use proper english do better in the world. Businesses don't respond well to slang.
Then again, if everyone starts using slang, it might become the "new english". After all, they are adding a great deal of slang terminology into the english dictionary.
You can't stop it, but there's no harm in ranting a little bit. Enjoy

Because of the selfish greed-is-good throw-away lawless society that's now in place in the UK this has rubbed off onto educational standards as well as personal standards i.e none! Plus regardless of phone character spacing we can still use pronunciation just shorten the message! But as already stated...zero standards.

I agree!
And I'm only 15. Haha.
I find it annoying when my friends chat with me using toggle text and "language". I don't really mind if they're texting me though.
I try to use proper grammar while on the net and encourage my friends to do the same. I tell them that it helps with English, grammar and typing speed.
I come from Asia so... English isn't our first language.

I presume that was a joke :D
Yes, I agree with you and I'm 16. I always type properly using grammer and spelling right but I do use slang when I speak to my friends.
I think especially as there is a spell check tool!
Haha, Mel

I assume from your reference to Shakespeare you are writing from England. As strange as you may find this, some of us in the US feel the same.
I leave you with a quote from Mr. Shakespeare that you may apply when necessary.
"More of your conversation would infect my brain".

lol at "sort it owt"
Not everyone here has English as their first language.
I do agree with you though. Some of what is written, by English speakers, is very difficult to decifer.
