Scotland is not independent as (so it would appear anyway) many people in Scotland do not wish independence. But that statement is of course unjustified - yes pro-unionist parties do make up more than the pro independent parties in Holyrood, but that doesn't always mean so do the people of Scotland.
In the 1970s (If I remember rightly) a referendum was held which needed an X percentage of the voting population to vote in it, which was cut short by One Percentage, even though more than half of the people that did vote for it, wanted independence. Unfair - almost certainly - but it was the will of the UK parliament. Scotland never got wanted it wanted because of it.
Scotland has slowly become more independence with the Scotland Act giving Scotland more powers and of course Holyrood.
Now Scotland has voted for a minority SNP led Executive, Okay it is almost a sure thing to say that they will not get a Bill passed in Holyrood for an Independence referendum, but with help from the Lib Dems the next 3 - 4 years could easily see Scotland taking on more powers, like more control over taxes.
UK politics always changes, just enough to keep any "revolution" at bay the processes are slow for independence but it will come, it has too.

We do have a viable means of supporting our economy, independence should, dear I say, even make us more wealthier. With pro-business policies, better and fairer ways to tax, better use of renewables, etc - could see Scotland richer per head than England.

Blackjack:

Try reading a history book instead of getting your history from Braveheart. It was a great film, but played pretty fast & loose with historical fact. BTW - Scotland had our own independent government until 1707.

is was. william wallace (see BRAVEHEART- it's done quite well for a mel gibson movie) traded his life for the independent life of scotland. quite a guy. well, scotland remained free until late 1500s/early 1600s when queen elizabeth 1 died without a heir nor a spare. the english royalty went to scotland in search (kind of like a royal talent search - which is was, really) for a king to take over. couldn't go to the french (like no way!). so as they accepted the job, they also brought down to london the throne of scone & scotland's long-sought freedom. it's been part of the united kingdom ever since. scotland is beginning , since the 1950s anyway, to ask back for it's independence & why not. but i don't think that's going to happen any time soon. if scotland goes indie then wales would be next. after wales then northern ireland, etc. see? until england is ready to be england once more w/o the uk next to it's title, all bets are off. by the way, scotland - YOU ROCK!

Actually there is plenty of money in Scotland. In fact, we are one of the richest small countries in the world. The fact is though, there are not enough people here who will vote nationalist. It will happen eventually, but until then we can keep sending our money down south.

Just have a read through the following site.

They have the right to be, only have to elect a Nationalist Govt/ But they are a poor country, and would not be able to survive without substantial financial aid...If no such aid was forthcoming then the population of Scotland would be bankrupt as they would have to make massive tax increases or cut services to an even greater degree than they do now...It is every Nations aspiration to be independant, and this present Govt. has gone some way towards it, but it must be the will of the whole of the Scottish people, not just the nationalists.

Am really glad to say this but the Nationalists are now in power in Scotland maybe now we will get total separation instead of partial.

Because it has no viable means of supporting an independant economy.

By the way...North Sea Oil is not in Scottish waters.....it is mainly in International Waters and is drilled by multinational companies....and in any case it is running out due to being drilled badly.

They joined England in a United Kingdom a few hundred years ago and no-one's got around to arranging a divorce. Being part of a United Kingdom gives great job opportunities for their politicians and royalty, so they'll probably stay that way.
