You must spend your money for the best brand.
As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.
I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.
On www.hp.com you can even customize your laptop. And also you can check the price.

The best comes from a systems designer rather than just systems builders like Dell and Compaq. Asus is an original systems designer and they supply proprietary parts to system builders.
Twigsoffury is also right. Buy the features and not just the brand. If you have gaming in mind, choose the GPU first then CPU second. To help you choose, here's a ranking of mobile graphics.

Fujitsu and Asus overall, but most companies out there due make very nice models in the $2,000 range.
But on a cheaper budget I would say HP/Compaq. Go for a Circuit City or Office Depot/Max special. Go for a $500 HP AMD Turion X2 dual core model. It will only have 512mb of RAM, but you can get a 2gb kit at newegg.com for $65.
Or if you're pretentious you can get a MAC.

Really. It's not the brand you buy anymore its the features you'll get for the price. Try and get a laptop with 1024MB of system memory or 1.0GB of RAM. a Speedy Intel or AMD Processer. a E-6300 or AMD 64 x2 4800+ is always a GREAT cpu to have. Extra features like additonal USB ports, External SATA, and built in wireless are features some people forget about when purchasing a laptop. Also ask if the computer comes with Windows Office. or if the computer has the older Windows Xp or the New windows Vista Operating system :)
Happy hunting and dont forget about purchasing the laptop online. you can save 100's of dollars by purchasing the same laptop that was in the store, online.
try www.tigerdirect.com and www.newegg.com those are the two major online computer vendors. 100% trustworthy and great customer support when it comes to purchasing something with them.
