Good Luck Culture Shock sucks!! Struggling through it right now. I can't help you more because I am not familiar with Filipino Culture but perhaps if you asked questions you are concerned about I could answer. Although you have a bonus you speak and write English so that alone will make things easier for you. Being able to read signs, menus and even listen to things such as the news will help you feel less isolated. Speaking the language will enable to you make friends and ask questions out and about such as what is this or how much is that. I would suggest you visit Virtual Tourist and look up the city you will be living in and see if you can't locate an area that has a Filipino grocery store. Being able to shop and cook foods you are familiar with will also help plus an added benefit will be meeting other Filipinos there. That website helped me tons in preparing me for an overseas move but truthfully no amount of research will eliminate the problem on lessen it some. Good Luck.

I would love to disagree with the people on here who will answer racism, but it is a reality.

Not all Americans are racist, many are. But so are people from other countries. It is caused by fear and ignorance. They can't or won't accept differences in others.

The culture shock will not be just from the attitudes. The lifestyle is completely different. There is a huge amount of diversity in everything, such as, foods, clothes, beliefs, entertainment, living environments, and many other areas, not just in ethnicity.

I do have two questions. Why are you in such a hurry to marry an American? Is it just to establish citizenship quicker? If so, you are getting married for all the wrong reasons. It is bound to fail. By the way, American girls are not exactly like girls from other countries. Some of the differences are good, some are not.

I have had several friends from the Philippines. They have adapted well after the first 1-3 years. I hope you have patience.

Freedom said it all. I hate to say it but most Americans
find it easier to condemn someone than to understand
them. They seem to think people can learn another
language overnight yet at the same time after over 500
years only a small hand full can speak one of many Native
American languages. As shallow as we are, we still like
to see a bright smile. Smiles will carry you a long way. As
for me I say welcome to the USA.
