The U.S. and its allies accomplished much by winning WW 2. Besides defending territory and protecting the well being of the citizenry, permanent changes were made.
WW 1 was a justifiable war but the peace treaties afterward caused more problems than any gains achieved. The European countries were more interested in splitting up the war bounty than building a better world. Woodrow Wilson tried to find peaceful solutions but the world was not interested.
By helping Europe rebuild after WW 2, the U.S. kept the next generation much more peaceful and prosperous. The USSR was also a winner, but that is another story.
Likewise, the Allied victories in the Pacific and rebuilding of warring nations benefited the peace and economy of the region.
The relative peace and prosperity of the second half of the 20th century is resultant from the peace won by the U.S. and allies.

Actually the Allied Powers won the war. The United States was the leader of the Allied Powers and contributed immensely to the victory as did England, France, and Australia. Therefore all were victors in the war including the Unites States.

The US was part of a winning team that defeated the Axis powers of WW2. The US did not & could not win this war alone. What is important is to remember the group effort and not signal out one group.

Why is the US consider a curial element of the war?

The industrial might of the USA was the deciding factor in the war.

WW1 had racked Europe, the depression had made things worst. England was just getting back on her feet and the last thing England wanted was a war. WW1 had virtually wrecked the world’s economies.

By June 1941 England was broke, England was nearly financially insolvent. Had it not been for lend lease England would not have been able to but the war materials that they needed to prosecute the war. Best proof of this is Hitler himself, Hitler viewed Great Britain as "all but over", and focused his attention on the USSR. So by all do respect the USA was part of the war because the American tax payer was now paying for Britain’s war materials.

By December 1941 German troops were 13 km outside of Moscow. France was out of the war and most of Western Europe was under control of Germany. Spain was on the verge of entering the war, and was in discussion with Germany for the Rock of Gibraltar, and a number of French provinces the difficulties were Spain wanted parts of France that Hitler had promised to Italy. .

So in December 1941 WW2 was by far not decided in fact things were very much leaning towards the Axis. And by April 1942 the entrance of Japan had pushed the Allies out of the Pacific and was threatening Australia & India.

The USA financed the allies war machine, the US formed a fleet that feed the Allies, and brought the raw material to the US that were made into the war material the feed the war machine. Rubber to tires, Oil, Tin, Iron. Steel, coal for the furnaces. The sheer scale of what the US did to feed & equip the allies was unparallel. The Norwegian flagged ships & sailors that had escaped German occupied Norway were paid for by the US.Etc. The very scale of how the US organized the logistics was amazing.

The US contribution to the war effort was great, Unparallel in history. The US was a deciding factor in the war. The US became even greater when it did not make the Allies & Axis repay their debts and continued to fund the reconstruction of Europe. For nearly 60 years a huge part of the American tax payers taxes were put into the war, reconstruction and defense of Europe and Asia. That is what made the US Great.

Because WE WON! If it hadn't been for the Americans entering the war Germany could have won. Once the Americans came up with the invasion plan of Europe and helped the Brits beat the Germans in the desert and drive them into Italy. The US fought alone for the most part against Japan. Without the assest and skilled American Soldiers the war wouldn't have ended in '45 thats for sure and millions more jews would have been killed.

The main reason for this assumpion is due to the fact that America ended the war with Japan that continued after Germany had surrendered by dropping the two atomic bombs on the citizens of 2 Japanese cities, killing thousands of innocent civilians...Bit like when the Germans Bombers attacked British cities....The main war in Europe was won as a direct result of the combined forces of the British,Russian,Australian,New Zealand ,India and the rest of the common wealth,....America only came to help Europe Halfway through the war when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour!.....A big mistake by the Japanese!....

Reasons why America may consider itself the Victor of WW II

i) Europe lost most of its colonies [this meant American run organisations could expand to other parts of the world without places places like Elysée Palace or Westminster objecting. Equally in the very same colonies American values of freedom and business had begun to take its toll on the mother countries. This is clearly visible on Australia in the 60's, and much of Africa in the 60's]

ii) The Soviet Union is no more : In short, democratic values that are often said to be the basis of the american constitution have taken over in much of Eastern europe and places formerly under the sphere of Russia.Over the years America has also managed to influence countries on the lines of Italy not to get to the redline [e.g. Italians living in America often speak of having to write letters home urging their relatives there not to vote for communists as Rome could,by default, be run from Moscow].

iii) Japan [formerly the most influential kingdom in Asia] is now under American influence. This was clearly decided in 1945 through the bombardment of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Japan's military needs are, today, entirely run by Washington [i.e. Japan does not have any soldiers at all - in policy. Whether this is true or not is debatable].

With this in perspective, it would not be surprising to consider America the actual winner of the WW. Much of it has everything to do with influence. It would be wise not to boast too much about this because in reality a country that does not know how to utalise its power or misuses it, is in honest fact powerless.

I was under the impression that the Allies won the war because the Axis powers surrendered to the Allies.

Who wins and who loses when the dust of war settles? It can be argued that no one country won but what was won was the cause of Democracy - - - - - if one politely ignores most of Eastern Europe, the division of Germany, the Cold War - - - and if as some historians do one accepts that the eventual burst of Democracy ignited by Reagan & Gorbachev was the result of World War Two since the two of them embodied the War. Reagan the Old Warrior - - - Gorbachev the young warrior witness to the excesses of the Nazis.

All that said - - - of the countries that participated in World War Two, the US of A had the most success because of the leadership of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Cabinet and other Apointees and the US Military. America did not simply fight a War, America prepared for it and mapped out the War and the Peace, more or less. America 'benifitted' from the War without the charges of war profiteering that plague World War One. America embraced the post war by pouring her returning warriors into Colleges & Univercities, generously allowing 'therapy' for thousands of soldiers, sheltering them from 'work' until they could confront in head on, most often as Managers & Executives, or professionals in Sports and Enterainment.

Peace...

trhe U.S. werent even involved in the war until it was half over. they ended up joining the allies when they were already winning the war.

by the time the U.S. joined, germany and japan were both running out of manpower, help from friends, and ammunition.. it was only a matter of time before they surrended had the U.S joined the fight or not.

read some in depth history books - the U.S. goverment admits this is what was happening.... however... no government would be silly enough to over look such a great source of propaganda to use over the next few elections.

and the "other side" did not surrender to the U.S. - they surrendered to the allies, which was lead by Britain.

Tohsimas135 (above) is correct, but failed to note that we paid off the war debts of Germany and France for YEARS after the War. Everyone knows the winner always picks up the tab.
