DO NOT BUY A SLOW RELEASE FISH FEEDING BLOCK
These things do nothing but release excess nitrates into the water and with no one there to do water changes, often KILL THE FISH THRU WATER POLLUTION!!! You have 2 choices:
Buy an AUTOMATIC feeder. This $30 (US) clips to the side of the tank and runs on a timer. Every day it drops a measured amount of food into the water. (same amount you feed daily)
Put 2-3 clumps of live ANACHRIS plants into the tank. Anachris is an oxygenator and remover of fish waste. Also, since goldfish are primarily veggies, they'll eat it.
PLEASE NOTE:
Both above scenarios will only work with a tank with a running filter. If this is a bowl, and you're gone longer than 3 days, then you MUST give it to someone else to care for. Your fish won't starve in a bowl in 3 days but the waste buildup may kill them.
If this is a tank, remember to connect the power source for the filter to the same battery backup that powers your computer. Most filters cannot restart themselves if the water level drops below the normal suction line.
I have vacationed and left fish in a tank successfully with the Automatic feeder- it was well worth the $30. (US) I did a gravel wash and water change right before and right after I got home. I was gone for 2 1/2 weeks.
Hope this helps- PLEASE do NOT buy a time release food block!
Wow-checked back, love the fact I get a negative vote because I know what I'm talking about... try to help a guy out and get panned for an intelligent response...

How long are you going away for. If more than a week id put a slow release feed block in, like most said, but also put a neutraliser block in, which doesn't hurt at any time anyway!

You can buy slow release food blocks that can last from ten days to four weeks. They are sold at some of the supermarkets i.e Tesco and Asda. Petshops and you could probably ask our vet for advice. Also if that fails there are reputable companies of pet sitters who will just come in and feed them for you. They can provide references

Fish can survive around 3 weeks without food. However, if you buy the blocks that release food, what you will end up with is rotting food in the tank for the duration while you are away, which can lead to disease. It is better, and kinder, to just not give him any food. He will be fine

You can buy fish food at the pet shop for your fish which will last for 2 wekks. It is a solid block and dissolves very slowly over 14 days for your fish to feed.

hi!
Your local pet shop should be able to get you some "holiday tablets" It works very well. Then you can go on holiday with peace of mind that your fish will be teken care of.
