The black rubber which seals seems to be wearing thin around the rear-seat windows. I can see some areas where the rubber looks to have worn.. probably from water channelling around on the bottom of the rubber.

Those rear-seat windows don't open at all... they are just housed in place by the black rubber.... but water seems to have worn it in places.. and it's dry and looking like it could thin out in places. It's a VW Golf MKIV 2003.

Is there any sort of lubrication I could apply to the black rubber to better protect it from water... to make it less likely the black rubber will rot away in coming years?

btw - I'm referring to the black rubber seals on the exterior glass side of the car (not interior)

Try silicone spray lubricant.(3-M wet-type is best) Most auto glass shops or parts stores carry this. It softens the rubber up, and makes it pliable again. I always use it on door gaskets and trunk lid gaskets to soften them up, and it makes them shed water better.

armour all cleaning wipes - dash, vinyl and a lot of surfaces! It restores and protects! You can find it at Wal-mart, ace hardware and many auto stores and other retail stores! Hope this helps!

I use Armor All on mine, and it works great. They also have 'stronger' rubber protectorant products at auto parts stores.
