Hmm....there are a lot.....Hurricaine katrina is maybe an obvious.....can get into politics and waht not...

The tsunami that EVERYONE knows about...is another......i really dont' konw though how bad it was. I agree it was horrible.....but... I mean if this thing hit 5 years ago..maybe 10...i'm not sure it might have been a big story....our media has a big impact onthings now a days.

I think it was indonesia...about 1700's or 1800's....volcano erupted and it caused global climate chagne for a few years.

Earthquakes...in general..just google earthquakes and turkey or pakistan.....thye've had bad times lately.
With that...you could compare them to american earthquakes........in honesty...if the buidlings there were built better......american standards......it would not have beena s bad.

Not sure of teh scope of your course...but could mention the mega volcano in yellow stone.........couple million years ago.....

Could do the asteroid that wiped out hte dinousaurs.....

Maybe be a bit abstract...talk about the iraq war.
I agree sadaam was a bad person and needed to be taken out.....but i remember seeing "shock and aww"....i almost cried.....i'm a 3rd degree black belt and am desensitized to pain...but that even really struck me.....i mean...you didnt' see the faces...but soo many people were dieing at that moment.

I mean on CNN you saw a green night vision cam....then radom bursts of light....waht really was happening was people being crushed or burnt alive or fragmented into millions of pieces.

Like i said..thats a bit abstract...but in my mind..that is a natural disaster......human's have ended evolution......we change the enironment and are in control of it.......i mean we can make it rain now if we hve a drought.......we pretty much rule this planet.

THere is a lot...i'm sorry....i'm a math science guy...bu tmy strong poitn was always creativity......thorughout college..doign amath science major (chem e)...my best grades have been in english

You can divide natural disasters into: earthquakes, eruptions, floods and storms.

Earthquakes:

The earthquake that killed the most people happened in China in 1556. The strength on Richter scale is unknown, but victims were estimated to about 830 000.

The earthquake that made greatest damage happened in Japan in 1995. The strength on Richter scale is 7.7, 5500 victims, but the damage was estimated to 147 billion US dollars.

The strongest earthquake measured by the Richter scale happened in Alaska in 1964. The strength was 9.2, but there were 131 victims.

Eruptions:

The greatest eruption is supposed to have happened on volcano Vesuvius in Italy in 79 AD. It has destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii, and the cities of Herculanum and Stabiae were covered with ashes and mud. The victims are estimated about 3000.

The eruption that happened in Indonesia in 1883 destroyed much of the crops, so about 92 000 people died of hunger as a consequence of the eruption.

Flood:

The flood that killed the most people happened in China in 1642, after the rebels had destroyed the dam. The victims are estimated to about 300 000.

The flood that made greatest damage happened in USA in 1993. The Mississippi flooded and destroyed the surrounding area, leaving 12 billion US dollars of damage.

The greatest rain flood happened in Johnstown, USA in 1889. The victims are estimated to about 2 200.

The monsoon flood in Bangladesh in 1988 left 30 million homeless.

Storms:

The Carribean ''Big Hurricane'' in 1780 was the greatest hurricane ever. It has killed more than 20 000 people.

The ''Georges'' hurricane in 1998 hit USA and produced about 5 billion US dollars of damage and arond 400 victims.

The greatest tornado ever happened in 1925. It is called the The Tri-State Outbreak because it has hit Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana. The estimated victims are about 700.

The greatest typhoon ever happened in Hong Kong in 1906. It has left arond 10 000 victims.

P.S. Hope it will be enough. You should also mention the great asteriod hit around 65 million years ago, which has killed the dinosaurs, because that is also a natural disaster.

There was a great earthquake and tsunami early to mid 1900's in Chile. Largest earthquake ever I believe. The tsunami from that earthquake hit most of the countries around the ring of fire. Many people died. Building underwater to this day. Mt. Pinatubo is a bad one. Not sure if I spelled it right.

One of the worst natural disasters in US history was Hurricane Andrew, of which I am a survivor and not a victim. My story is about 20 pages long, so e-mail me (my e-mail address is in my profile) and I'll detail my experience for you. I also invite other survivors to write me, whether it be Andrew or Katrina as we are all survivors and should not go through it alone.

What is called the little ice age caused a severe drop in temperature in Europe and as a result the black death (plague) was able to spread quicker and farther and killed more people.
