Silly question, it was for his bravery in speaking his mind in the face of theocratic fascism.

I'm sorry, but I've NEVER been able to figure out what all the hoopla over Rushdie is for.

I consider myself well-read, with eclectic tastes, but the man is just not 'all that' in my opinion.

I think he's popular in the same way as Paris Hilton. He appeals to a certain type, and that type happens to have a lot of clout. History will probably deflate his worth considerably.

That's a good question. He wrote "Satanic Versus" in 1988 and the UK waited almost 20 years to give him knighthood. How long does it usually take to get knighthood?

The first thing that came to my mind was why wasn't Dan Brown awarded? The writer of the Da Vinci Code? I think his book offended many Catholics.

What you say maybe right. I only first heard of him when he was knighted. He certainly is a controvertial figure.

I believe in freedom of speech, but certainly not the freedom to insult or hurt other's feelings. Religion is an extremely personal thing. Not something to mock with.

He should get an award for managing to stay alive despite a death sentence placed on him from the world's most backward, sick, delusional inhabitants who are trying to destroy the rest of us. Theo van Gogh wasn't that lucky.

it's to irritate moslems and cause more hostitlity. if you've read his books you'd know it wasn't for his contibution to literature. it's because some people feel his irritating moslems in a high point in the western concept of free speech. unfortunately his speech was pretty pointless.
