Blanche is one of the most complex characters ever created. Tennessee Williams outdid himself. She is at once morbidly frigid yet desirous of men. She lives in fantasy world, a bubble of her own creation, where she is an antebellum southern belle and the world beyond is filled with imaginary suitors and gentleman callers, with immaculate manners and clean fingernails. She lives this fragile existence, a piece of porcelain ever on guard against a spoiling chip, because she cannot bear the ugly realities of life.
