I was told by a guy that races beamers that he eliminated his clutch fan and his M3 is running just fine without it. I do a lot of interstate driving so Im not bogged down in city traffic too much

Yes, you can run without the clutch fan almost anytime you are cruising. In cool weather, below 70 deg. F. you may be able to drive for short periods in light traffic. The M3 engine generates much more heat than most engines because of all the HP that can be generated. Watch your TEMP Gauge very carefully. If the needle starts to go above the normal mid-scale range, better to shut it down, and/or take your foot off the gas pedal. Why don't you want to put in a new clutch fan?

With the known cooling problems that BMW's have I can not imagine anyone who has ever owned a BMW for a while to disregard a fan clutch. Lets make it simple, if you run the temperature into the red you are looking at replacing at a minimum the head gasket, cylinder head, or engine. None cheap. And if I remember the M3 has twin electric cooling fans mounted on the radiator.
Do your self a favor and replace the fan clutch.

Hello! its your clutch disc! Its totally worn(burned), I mean the linning or asbestos material had worn out to the least and the metal on which the linning seats on is grinding/scratching the flywheel and thats causing the squealing... The smell also tells that the linning had been worn out.Thats how the clutch disc linning material smells okay! the driver might have some issues with how to release the clutch pedal after shifting?... What happens when clutch burns is that, drive or torque wont be transmitted to the driving wheels and that you could shift to a gear but yet still the vehicle would stand stationary!not moving!! Dont try moving the car -it would cause the Clutch disc to distort the smooth surface of the flywheel , and that will take you to an extra mile spending lots of money okay!

Without a forced cooling your car will overheat, you friend probably fixed the fan hub so that the fan is running all the time. That will rub off some power and waste fuel but it will not hurt the engine. Just replace the part, it is not expensive.

if you run it with out fan clutch you will gain more power but you still need to install a electric fan to cool the radiator and the fluid inside so yes with no fan clutch but you need electric fan . u can over heat so u need one or the other. the reason i know is my truck has no fan clutch it is recomended to use other source of cooling just driving it wont cool your engine

This is a very good opportunity for you to switch to an electric fan set up!

It isn't expensive and installation is pretty straight forward too! You can get help from bavauto.com or even your local advance auto parts store!

Never drive w/o a fan, you will put extra strain on your cooling system and risk overheating your engine (and killing it).

you will need a fan delete kit.... it lets you run without the fan and replaces the thermostat so that it will turn the electric fan on sooner. It is not advised in warm climates... it's not worth it because you only gain a couple extra horsepower.
