Our culture is capitalistic. One side effect of capitalism that's not so good is that everything is valued based on money. People who make a lot of money are heroes, people who don't make a lot of money are considered useless. We use money to keep score. We don't even realize that we think this way.
This is one reason why we don't value children as much as we should in the US, because they cost money, they don't make money.
If everyone believed that enough was enough, it would be the end of capitalism. If everyone in the US decided to put 10% of their paycheck in the bank and never go into debt, it would be the end of the US economy.

Money is like air... you don't realize it's importance until you're running out. Many people do care too much about money, but try living on a tight budget every week and you'll see why some people become obsessed with obtaining it. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it gets you the things that do.
