Read the book. Forget the movie. Read it in the dark with just a reading lamp. (Be afraid be very afraid.) I've read this book several times and it can still give that "look over your shoulder feeling" After The Stand this is my favorite King book.

Stephen King openly admits he writes for the teenage market. His most mature work, and the one which shows he can really write in the classic tradition, was: "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." The movie followed the book to a point, then they tacked on a "feel good" ending that King neither wrote nor intended. I could feel the division between King's work and the screenwriter's add-on as I watched the movie.

It's a classic.
I won't say that it scarier than the movie but it's scary in a different way.
The book is definitely more complex than the movie and if you let your imagination go I'm sure you will enjoy several scares while reading it.
And I challenge you to get Jack Nicholson out of your head when you read it.

Yes, it is classic King. Very good as King goes! If you want to get a good taste for his work you should also try - Carrie, The Stand, Firestarter, and The Eye of The Dragon.

I agree with Misty....the book is way better than the movie. I'm talking about the first movie. Too many things were left out. Read it..........it's really good.
