Laptops shouldn't be left on 24 hours a day. They generate heat that isn't sufficiently redistributed with cooler air, causing them to fail sooner than they really should.

Remember you are talking about an air space that is probably 1 to 2.5 inches tall, not a full case desktop with plenty of air space for efficient cooling.

I see no reason why not. It saves electricity, keeps the machine (and its surroundings) cooler (not overtaxing the AC if you're in a warm climate) and it's much more quiet. (I have my computer in my room, so it's difficult to sleep with it running.)

If you have a more recent Operating System, you can always 'hibernate' your computer, which will allow you a much faster boot time later and put you back where you left off.

However, at least "once in a while" it is good to shut down the machine and allow it a clean reboot. There is no telling how many programs, services and utilities running on your machine are leaking resources and will cause your machine to start running slowly or cause errors over time if you always keep the machine on.

Then again, if you always want to keep it on, you can just perform the typical reboot and get the same effect.

That is fine. Stand by is not the same as turning it off asi there is still power running the RAM to keep information you were working on in memory. However stanby does reudce the use of electricity. You can also use Hybernate. Hybernate saves all the information in memory to the hard drive so that when you start your computer back up it starts where you left off. Hybernate requires as much hard drive space as you have RAM for example if you have 1 GB of ram you will be using 1GB of hard drive space since the contents of the ram are written to the hard drive. When you resume from hybernate the information that was written to the hard drive will be sent back to the RAM and your session will continue where you left off. Hybernate cuts power off completely saving you more energy and money..

Personally standby is good enough for me though if you are running of AC then i would just stanby if you are running off DC (battery pack) then i would hybernate.

Hope this helps good luck

sure. avg computer lasts 3-4 years, if u turn it off it lets the chips and harddrive rest, maximizes life, even little by little, an 8-10 hour sleeping period for you is a long period of time, why not let it turn off. if its in the same room as someone sleeping it can make it harder for that person to sleep as well. it blows less dust around since the fans are off. saves electricity.

Shut it down. The PC was not designed w/ lots of processing power then do nothing. Also so you would reduce your contribution to global warming. You and many like you might drown me in my island location in about 10 years time.

It purely depends upon your Purse, not the time(day/night)
Keep it open and enjoy and keep money for electricity bill and replacement of faulty accessories.

Go enjoy!

I don't I leave mine on for weeks at a time, just because I don't like to wait for it to boot up, but it does raise you electric bill.
