We live in Castle Rock, 30 min. south of Denver. Great town to raise a family. http://www.townofcastlerock.org
I work in Lakewood, it's ok but that area the towns all run together, Littleton, Lakewood, Arvada, Wheatridge Golden.
Castle Rock is a stand alone . Great schools, churches friendly people and stores to meet all your shopping needs including all the major big stores .But still has a historic downtown and main street.... it's safe, great police force

I live in Lakewood and its only 10 minutes or so away from the city. Its a pretty safe place. Theres also Golden which is about 5-10 minutes further west of Lakewood. If you dont mind going a little further outside Denver you could try Ken Caryl. Its around 30 minutes southwest of Denver and its a VERY safe place.

It depends what you mean by "safest". Highlands Ranch, Lonetree and Cherry Hills are probably the richest and lowest in crime. But, the kids have money to buy illegal drugs.
I've lived in Littleton and that has been very safe. Columbine didn't happen here. It happened in the next county over.
The school test we take is the CSAP and you can get the school accountibility reports online. In those are listed school crime, suspensions, free lunch percentage etc. That should help you pick an area. Cherry Creek, Littleton and Douglas County (Highlands Ranch) all have very high rankings.

You should try Idaho Springs. It's a small town nestled in the mountains on I-70. It's about a 30 minute drive from Idaho Springs to Downtown Denver. The only bad part is, you're in the mountains and it snows a lot.

The new "up and coming" cities are Brighton and Commerce City. They're old towns, but have new areas that are growing. Brand new homes/townhomes starting at $130K. My son goes to a charter school in Brighton and we're very happy with it. These cities are about 15-20 minutes outside Denver.

I think it is worth it to possibly research the Lafayette/Louisville/Superior area. I used to live in Lafayette and the biggest area of crime is the local Wal-Mart (shoplifters). Louisville has more activities than the other two but personally I think Lafayette is very nice. All three are about 20-25 minutes from downtown Denver.

Will you be working in Denver or will you still be looking for employment?
We live in the southwest part of Longmont of love it. We love the more rural appeal even though it's still a fairly nice sized town. Close to Boulder where my husband works. Not a lot of traffic.
The metro area is pretty big so depending on your specific needs there are a lot of options.

Littleton and Centennial are very nice places. The schools are good. I have not seen or heard of any crimes. Littleton is bigger than Centennial, but still nice. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to get from downtown to Littleton or Centennial but Littleton is big so it could take longer depending where you live in Littleton. I wouldn't live anywhere else.
