Yeah..see, the thing is, when washing and drying clothes, you probably just put your stuff in and take it out real quick without paying too much attention. By doing this you easily look over a poor little sock who is stuck to the side of the machine either because it's wet or static-y. Then you go about your business, as usual, and don't even realize the sock is missing 'til you need that damn matching pair, at which point that sock has probably been mixed with another batch of laundry - possibly belonging to someone else (if you're living with a bunch of people), or, which you don't have the time to search through - so the sock goes on living unmatched and probably stuck behind the washer/dryer or in the back of your closet/cabinet for the rest of its unhappy life.
THE END.

Well your question reminds me of an old episode of the TWILIGHT ZONE . That very thing happened in the episode. There was a place where all the missing items go such as socks, jewelry ,etc...... So that is where your socks go , unless they are stuck to other clothing . Did you ever think to check other items that you were washing at the same time . Good Luck with your missing socks .

Ha Ha Ha, you must have a house with kids. Kids of all ages rarely seem to be able to put both sock in the laundry pile. I once found that missing sock I thought was in the wash cycle in the inside of the pillow case on there bed, and I know they didn't sleep in there.

There are these little monsters that live under your house called the Borrowers. They live under everybody's house and they take things and sometimes they bring them back and sometimes, well they just like it so much they can't part with them. They love socks, scissors, ink pens, silverware, wash cloths, etc.
