hello all please help, i'm pretty computer savvy but i'm stumped. the missus wants well actually demands we upgrade to vista but i'm having trouble telling her its a 64 bit program there is no point putting it onto a 32 bit machine, my computer is a self build amd sepron 2200 running @ 2g/hz. is my processor a true 64 bit or 32 bit?. i know as a 32 bit processor it can take vista, but it wont operate at its optimum performance. i'm not going to waste my time spending the money on vista and then realising i have to do a full rebuild. i'd rather do it in one go. so is my processor 64 bit or 32 bit? any advice welcomed. thank you.

Okay first off, I would need to know exactly which Sempron model you are using, because there was never a 2200+ that ran at 2Ghz. However my educated guess would be that it is not a 64 bit, as only the later Semprons were, which I don't think you have.
No as for the Vista thing, I've heard stuff along this line before, simply not accurate. Vista is not a 64 bit Operating System. It is an operating system that is available in both 32 bit and 64 bit variations, however the 32 bit is by FAR the more common of the two. Almost every single brand new computer you see sold, with the newest and fastest parts, is sold with 32 bit Vista, not 64 bit. So, I would not be at all concerned about not getting Vista because you don't have a 64 bit CPU.
EDIT: Yes then definately only 32 bit. However of course the rest of what I said still applies.

If it's an AMD Sempron 64, then yes it does support 64-bit. I believe the Sempron 2200 is only available on socket A, which would not make it a 64bit processor anyways. It wouldn't really matter if Vista was installed on a 32bit or 64bit computer, there are barely any programs out there that run 64 bit or multi thread so you won't see any "optimum" performance. It's all about how good your hardware is for now. I think the basic version of Vista would work on your computer but Im not sure unless I knew how much RAM you have and what video card your running. Anyways, Vista is not that great right now, there are still a lot of uncompatible programs, sofware and drivers. Stick to XP, I will be for the next year or two until the bugs get worked out.

Right click on your My Computer icon and click Properties. Under the "Computer" subject, your CPU specs will come up. If it doesn't say AMD Sempron 64, it's not a 64 it's a 32 bit. Originally, the Sempron was made as a 32-bit CPU, the later models DO have 64-bit, but if you bought your CPU earlier, it's probably a 32.

Yes the core 2 duo cpu is a 32 bit / 64bit cpu. it will have no real issue running a 32 bit os, but ti will perform even better on a 64 bit os. The core 2 duo is cheaper than the core 2 quad, but boy are quads nice, for games there isn't a big need for them still, most games are designed for dual cores anyways, but other things like multitasking, mile converting, high def videos, and many other things, the quad core will easily outperform a core 2 duo. If you are just looking at getting a strong performer, the the core 2 duo is more than enough. Hope this helps

Your Athlon XP 2700+ is 32bit only. Vista has both 32bit and 64 bit versions.
