hi, my brothe had an accident some year ago, he went into a coma for 8 months, faster getting back from it, he was unable to use his legs and his left arm, fortunately his brain works normally. my question is there a wheel chair that he can manoeuvre with only one hand? anyone knows a site on the net containing that kindl of information?

If you mean a manual wheelchair that can be operated by one hand, then YES, they do exists.
I have seen a version of a manual wheelchair that has a handle sticking up in front of the user and the use have to push and pull forth and back - much like a rowing action - to propel himself in the wheelchair. However, it is very cumbersome and it might be frustrating to use.
But that was abou tfice years ago. I don't even know where to begin to look or if it is still in production.

As much as I work in disability sector and have been to equipment shows etc. I can not say that I have seem everything that is available. Techonology moves fast and there are always new wheelchair makes and models coming all the time - just like any other consumer product. But necessity being the mother of invention, I am sure there is something that can be used by your brother. You just need to keep searching.

Don't think I can help you much more than this. Also, I am in Australia and I can safely assume you are in the USA?

May be a powerchair will be more suited for his needs?

I disagree! I am disabled, and that is the least derogatory word I know, and I'm a word-artist. It recognizes a difference, not disrespectfully. A think a descriptive term cannot be an insult.

When he go through rehabilitation they should give him and other family member information about the type of wheelchair he needs. Most like it will be an electric one with hand control.

Physio could be a good investment too.

I would call the rehab center where he was after he came out of the coma and talk to either the occupational therapist or physical therapist who treated him/measured him for his standard chair. There are motorized chairs, but he needs to be reassessed for possible candidacy as not everyone is capable of using one. He will need to be measured, too, as they are custom-made.

I do know there are wheelchairs of that type--though I'm not familiar with what's on the market. However, below is a website that should point you in the right direction.

and click on web resources (left side of screen)

That should give you a good number of leads. Good luck! :)

His insurance should be able to get him a wheelchair that is better to maneuver in. If he is disabled and receives medicare they cover this kind of thing. Wheelchairs that are easily maneuvered in. Look into it, the doctor just needs to write a prescription and the physical therapist needs to get authorization for it.

Thats it!!
