Stepehen King is one of my all time favorites. Two of his books stand out beyond measure.
IT
The Stand
I have to warn you tho. ***IF*** you get a first generation IT you will be in possession of a book that almost got King put in prison. The current editions are just as good and have more in them. The re - write was forced, but he had cut chunks out of it to begin with so he took out the bad part and replaced it with 5 good parts. If you have not read the original copy then you wont miss the one bad part.
Another favorite is
The Talisman
I still HEAR "Wolf here and now" when certain situations come up.
Do not waste your time with The Black House ... same combination of authors, but total crap... I have never missed my money spent on King books until that one.
So to sum it up.. in order
IT
The Stand
The Talisman (co Author is Peter Straub)
He has several other good ones, but when you read his books you get a different feel from them. These three have the same style and will really whisk you away from reality. By the way, if are not afraid of clowns, after IT you will be.

I've read just about everything by/about Stephen King. Some of my favs are Cujo, Pet Semetary, The Stand (which is an excellent mini-series) & The Green Mile which was a good movie too.

Start from the begining - Carrie (I believe King was 19 when he wrote it). It is an entertaining read and will give you a good idea of what you are in for!
If you want a good feel for his works try them in this order.
Carrie
Fire Starter
Salems Lot
It
The Eyes of the Dragon
The Stand
The Green Mile
The Drawing of The Three
The Cell
The Stand and Fire Starter are by far my favorites...

all Stephen King books I loved except for The Dark Tower ones, but my faves are Cujo, Rose Madder, and The Shining. Would definately reccomend read Shining and then watch the movie as it will make alot more sense then. Oh, and Pet Sematary for sure!

The Green Mile has always been my fav. Maybe 'cause I saw the movie first.
Carrie absolutely grabbed me. I read that almost straight through. Freaked myself out too.
Pet Sematary was really sad, for me. Also freaked out. Couldn't watch the movie. More, spiritual, to me, than Carrie.
Everything's Eternal I had to suffer through. I mean, it was good, just didn't hold me as much.
Hearts in Atlantis-very good, all around.
Then there's one about a couple, having fun in a bed...can't remember the name. Didn't like it at all.
Oh and the Dead Zone! Also good but saw the series first.
If you're looking for one more well-rounded, definitely Hearts in Atlantis or The Green Mile. Carrie I would recommend most, but it's not as, worldly. The Dead Zone I did love, but that was mostly 'cause of the tv show.

The Dark Tower series has a sort of fantasy-type setting. I only read the first two, but I've heard good things about the rest.
Some of my favourites (and classic)
Carrie
The Shining
Firestarter
Thinner
The Stand
Others that creep me out:
It
Misery
Pet Cemetery
Tommyknockers

Scary -- "The Shining"
Post-apocalyptic dystopian future: "The Stand" (GREAT book).
Novellas: "Four Seasons" (includes 'The Body', made into the movie 'Stand By Me' -- awesome writing).
Serial -- "The Dark Tower"
Also, "On Writing", a how-to book for writers.
