Set a time of which you want to go to bed.
Count 20- 30 minutes before that.
Relax. Have a beverage (such as tea, juice, with a dash of alcohol, or even warm milk with a dash of nutmeg). Watch TV, read a mellow book, or listen to some music. Do anything that relaxes you, during that time, and then when the time comes, lie in your bed, and think of something to make you relax and calm your body.
Do this as many nights as you can, so that your body can adjust to it. Before you know it your sleeping pattern will be back on track.

I know this will sound like some odd methods, but bare with me. Try walking in a tub filled about 2-3 inches of luke-warm/warm water for 10 min. Or try taking a nice relaxing warm bath for about 15 min.
If those don't suit you, try drinking a cup of warm milk if you aren't lactose intolerant. Or, chamomile tea works as well.
The doctor will probably prescribe you or tell you to just take sleeping pills, but they have unwanted side effects. If you can get a small dose of melatonin pills I suggest taking only 1 melatonin pill when you know you will get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

try to stay awake and try to go to bed at the same time each night and not take naps during the day so your body is tired. also avoid caffeine and heavy foods around bedtime so you'll be able to sleep easier. You could read too before bed to make you fall asleep more relaxed. Or you could listen to music.

i've been mostly on nights since 1973. if my sleep pattern gets screwed up for any reason, i can usually get back into sync by taking a 2 hour nap before my shift starts my work week. if that dosn't work, i try staying up on my nights off.

I think you should exercise before bedtime, then have a hot bath.
Start by going to sleep just an hour a week different, and gradually extend your bedtime!

It may take awhile. If it takes more than a couple of weeks, go to your doctor.
