People talk more than listen. Why ? For many reasons:
- they think that they know everything
- they are not willing to give you a chance to speak out
- they don't have time to listen
- they can't focus
- they get confused between hearing and listening.

Most people do not really listen and there are many reasons why this happens. Many do not understand what you are talking about. Eg - how much do you know how people feel about a near-fatal accident, a violent mugging, a loss of a child, being conned by a builder, offense behaviour from a neighbour, etc. You can get stuck on something just said and miss the next minute of talk. It takes considerable effort to listen, to remember, and to understand what people are saying. A listener's concentration reduces slowly over the minutes. Others can find that what you are saying is too painful, too burdensome or too upsetting and switch off early in the proceeding, especially if you touch on a painful area in their own lives. It takes a lot of practice to listen and it is often necessary to cut people short and "get to the point" because of time restraints. This makes you look as though you are impatient and really don't want to know.
