I know this doesn't really answer your question but I think horror movies that are based on a true story are the scariest. Something like the Amityville Horror, things like that.
When at the end of the movie you're left thinking..."Man, this stuff actually happened?"

The Exorcist has got to be the scariest of all times. Recently saw Disturbia. It was pretty good

"Pet Semetary" and "It". Both based on books by Stephen King. The books were way better and way scarier but these movies will get me everytime. The older horror movies are the best.
