To Get Rich !! !! Greed. Tired of garbage wage job wanted an Empire of Riches. Dreamed of Being the Merchant Prince of the Indies after finding the shortest route to the Indies. Tripped up by not having a back up plan. Ended up hauled in chains to jail.

He wanted to find a shorter route to Asia so Europeans could trade to get spices. And yes, Europeans knew the Earth was round, just no one explored the other side yet though!!! It was difficult traversing the Middle East then continuing nor was it any better going around Cape Horn at the Southern tip of Africa.
