Mao Ze Dong was a revolutionary leader of China. If people think his physical appearance is "ugly" - that matters very little when compared to who he really was, and what he achieved in his lifetime. If people say he is "cruel" - once again, that matters very little since those people never lived in China in the early - mid 20th century. The Chinese warlords were cruel, the KMT (Chinese Nationalist Party) were cruel, and the Japanese who occupied China were also notorious for their cruelty too. I know he was highly intelligent, and his written works are still in wide circulation today.

He was a leader of the Communist Party in China who became absolute ruler over the country. As a ruler, he was cruel and often foolish. He did help strengthen and modernize China, but at a huge cost to the people.
You can learn all about him in the biography linked here.

He was the leader or the communist party during the chinese civil war, he drew the Nationalists (?) to Taiwan.
He created working communes that worked to impress him however they failed. They replanted the same crop over and over again to make themselves look productive. They experienced food shortages and a cultural revolution that destroyed much of china's culture and historical records.
